Discipline equals Freedom

Field manual MK1-MOD1

Expanded Edition

by Jocko Willinks

Categories: Mindset

Content: 247 pages

Chapter one: "THOUGHTS"

Describes everything about mindset

Chapter two: "ACTIONS"

Includes: "Fuel" (jockos take on nutrition)

"Repair and Maintenance" (injury prevention and how to deal with injury from a mindset point of view)

And the "appendix" this part includes workout ideas. I would categorize these workouts more into calisthenics or home workouts.

My opinion: I genuinely like this book, especially the things Jocko Willinks puts out. For the people that don't know Jocko, go look him up. He is a retired naval officer who served on the Navy SEALs, and that is exactly
the type of vibes you get when you read this book, being motivated and moving towards your goal no matter what gets put in your way. I think the advice he gives when it comes to mindset and motivation is solid,
it is good advice for people that have a fairly high level of intrinsic motivation
and want to lift it to the next level or keep going when they fall off track.

When it comes to the second chapter, I cannot agree on everything, but then again Jocko is no
nutritional expert, so I didn't have high expectations for this part anyway. That being said,
his approach about reducing sugar and processed food will work and is probably
a good idea for most people but not for the reasons given in this book.

When it comes to the workouts, I am no expert in calisthenics and minimal equipment training but
the training methods look solid to me. The biggest point he makes in this chapter is:
"The most important thing to do is SOMETHING. ANYTHING." And I couldn't agree more!

I guess he is big on stretching for injury prevention (I would not agree on that) but goes on to say that you can stretch your muscle to the extent it is needed by warming up doing your exercises with a full range of motion and a high level of intent (I can agree with this).

All in all, it is a nice book that I have near my bed in case I don't want to get up in the morning or don't want to get a task done. I read one or two pages to remind myself why I do everything and what my goals are.

Best for: people that like hardcore motivation, that love the spirit of blood, sweat, and tears.

Favorite quote: "Fight weak emotions with the power of logic; fight the weakness of logic with the power of emotion.

And in the balance of those two, you will find the strength and the tenacity and the guts to say to yourself:

I. DON'T. STOP."
